How many prophecies are in the Bible?

By George Konig

According to some scholarly estimates, there are nearly 2000 Biblical prophecies.

Some scholars, though, including J. Barton Payne, have arrived at a specific number in their counting of Bible prophecies. In the Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecy, by Payne, there are a total of 1,817 Biblical prophecies.

Of those prophecies, 1,239 are in the Old Testament, and 578 are in the New Testament.

By Payne's count, the 1,817 prophecies involve 8,352 of the Bible's verses. And, because there are 31,124 verses in the Bible, the number of prophetic verses amounts to about 27 percent of the total number of verses in the Bible.

That means that about one-fourth of the Bible is prophecy.

There are many web sites that explain Bible prophecy, including one at, which offers commentary on 100 of the Bible's prophecies.

There are different types of Bible prophecy. Some Bible prophecies predicted details of the birth, life, mission, death and resurrection of a Messiah (Jesus Christ), according to Other Biblical prophecies foretold of events involving the people and land of Israel, the surrounding nations, and the future of the world.

There also is a group of Biblical prophecies that people sometimes refer to as the End Times prophecies, which speak of how the world, as we know it, will come to an end. While that might sound like a scary topic, it actually is good news for Christians because the end of the world marks the beginning of something new, and better: eternal life in heaven with God.
